The greater pipefish is found all around the British Isles and is regularly found in the Mediterranean Sea. It's habitat is usually among seaweed and seagrass.
They feed on live mysids and small prawns.
They breed from May to August. The males carry the eggs and young in a brood pouch until they are about 25mm long.
Habitat degradation and disturbance through direct anthropogenic activities such as coastal developments and the effect of fishing gear e.g. trawls and dredge.
